Description

A former underground command post — the headquarters of the Albanian Air Force and its associated military unit. It is situated on the eastern side of the Sunny Hill massif. As the Albanian Air Force shrank in size, the bunker became redundant.

The facility consists of a long hall with a single bend, divided internally by partitions. It is served by a main entrance and an emergency exit. A corridor branches off from the main entrance, leading to a series of unfinished rooms — most likely intended to house an armoury and a storage depot. Signs of a recent renovation are visible throughout: the ceiling was clad in plastic panels, and plastic light switches and power sockets can be seen on the walls.

Inside the bunker there is a room containing military documents dating from the period when the facility was in active use. The latest dates found are from the early 2010s. The documents concern internal processes within the Albanian Air Force, the state of the country’s airspace, and requests for overflight clearance submitted by various non-civilian foreign aircraft wishing to pass through Albanian airspace.

Outside, several vehicle garages, a headquarters building, and a lapidarium — a memorial to soldiers who fell in the Second World War — can be seen. A gazebo near the site offers a pleasant view over Tirana.

The site is unguarded. Reaching the relevant side of the hill requires passing through a gap in a locked gate, though the gate appears to serve no purpose beyond preventing vehicles from driving further up.
