Description

Beneath the hill topped by a castle and lighthouse stretches a vast network of tunnels and bunkers, featuring a rangefinder post and four gun emplacements. The tunnels run through the hill from end to end, with a total length of several hundred metres. They run both parallel and perpendicular to one another, so the overall extent of the workings may exceed a kilometre. In some sections the walls are lined with concrete; elsewhere bare rock has been left exposed. The complex contains both spotlessly clean concrete rooms and passages choked with debris. The tunnel portals are painted in brown camouflage. A spiral underground staircase and a small shaft — where iron steps once existed but have since disappeared — lead up to the former rangefinder post. The guns could be positioned either outside or directly within the portals themselves. No ironwork has survived. Remnants of instructions and data tables can still be found. Bats have made their home inside. There are many entrances, all connected within. The bunkers face directly toward the Greek island of Corfu.
