Description

A large abandoned bunker hewn into the rock beneath the central hill of the city. A branching tunnel system on two levels, one above the other. Several entrances and exits, concrete staircases, two ventilation shafts serving as emergency exits. The main entrance is hidden literally beneath the street, while the others open under buildings or into someone’s back garden. The facility most likely served as the command post for the city and regional administration, a military coordination headquarters, and a shelter for ordinary civilians in the wider tunnels.

The bunker was built in several stages; the lower level was never fully completed — there are dead ends running straight into bedrock. It leaks, is flooded by sewage and groundwater, and is subject to seasonal inundation — the lower tunnels fill to waist depth. It is unlikely to dry out completely, so even at low water levels rubber boots are advisable for navigating the sticky clay.

A remarkable amount of metal has survived: nearly all the slender blast doors, ventilation equipment, filters, toilets, and even a small generator. The furniture is in poor condition — chairs and beds have practically dissolved. Some room doors still retain intact glass panels. There are no inscriptions and almost no litter. The bunker probably once had a large generator in a separate small outbuilding outside the main entrance, but only its concrete plinth remains. A well was provided inside the bunker as a source of drinking water.

The site is abandoned and unlikely to be of interest to anyone, but it is best not to catch the eye of local residents when entering — they can be suspicious.
