Radio Communications Site on the Mountain

A former radio centre and radar station for monitoring airspace south of Tirana. Platforms were levelled and several buildings erected to accommodate equipment vehicles; today only ruined walls remain. Two miniature communications bunkers, each around 10 sq m, stand on two separate mountain peaks roughly 400 metres apart. A mobile phone tower has been erected above one of them, though it has no connection to the bunker itself.

An unfinished large bunker faces the Tirana–Elbasan road with its portals, which can be located on a map by the spoil heaps. A descending path once led to them, but the easiest approach now is simply to walk down the slope directly above the portals. Construction stopped once the tunnel had been driven through from one portal to the other, before any concreting or vault reinforcement was done. As a result, the main adit has partially collapsed, and to see the full site you need to enter both portals. The larger one is home to a substantial bat colony.

The site is unguarded, although one of the bunkers — the one built beneath the mobile tower — bears the inscription “guarded by the Ministry of Defence”. The tower itself is alarmed.
