Storage Tunnels in a Canyon

Description

Underground weapons and ammunition storage facilities set inside a scenic canyon. Balconies have been hewn into the sheer canyon walls, facing each other across the gorge. From the balconies, storage tunnels run deep into the rock, sealed by heavy metal blast doors. A bridge once spanned the gap between the balconies — at some point it was overturned by a violent rush of water. You can still cross it carefully to reach the opposite side, or descend to the stream and wade across to the other bank.

The underground ammunition storage complex consists of approximately twelve independent tunnels, each between 50 and 100 metres long and around 10 metres wide. Beyond the blast door lies a small ventilation room, followed by the main storage hall. The condition of the tunnels varies: some have preserved their photogenic corrugated concrete waterproofing panels, others have not. All tunnels are sealed by massive metal blast doors. Several of the storage tunnels on the opposite bank have retained their thin metal airtight inner doors. Concrete blocks are stacked along the walls — they were used to raise wooden crates off the floor and protect them from moisture.

The last 300–500 metres of the approach can only be covered on foot due to the difficult terrain. Near the entrance to the site stands a half-ruined barracks, home to a harmless old woman who keeps dogs. They are not aggressive, but they bark loudly. The woman does not mind visitors and smiles warmly if her dogs are brought food. In the view of the Urbex Albania team, this site is one of the most scenic in the storage tunnels category.
