Description

The grounds of a former military installation that housed an engineering brigade of the Albanian Army. Unlike a combat unit, this brigade operated no fighting vehicles — only engineering equipment.

The base occupies a hollow between two hills and consists of a cascade of small open platforms with tunnels cut into the hillside in front of each one. The platforms served as parking and repair areas for equipment, as parade grounds for personnel, and are flanked by several buildings now in a state of collapse. The tunnels functioned as garages, fuel and ammunition stores; the southernmost tunnel housed the brigade headquarters. The tunnels on the eastern side of the site were never completed and are now inhabited by badgers. In total there are approximately twelve tunnel-garages, one headquarters tunnel, and six storage tunnels in varying states of completion. Each garage tunnel could hold four pieces of equipment. Some tunnels are connected to one another at the far end by a narrow passage.

The site is open: locals walk through it and graze livestock here. Nobody pays any attention to visitors.
