Underground City of Kukës

The most extensive section of the so-called “underground city” of Kukes. In reality it is a network of tunnels running beneath several streets of the city at a depth of around 20 metres. It connects a number of key buildings: the city administration, the police station, the bank, several basement bomb shelters, or simply exits into the ground floors of certain five-storey apartment blocks. Hundreds of metres of tunnels, numerous staircases and vertical spiral descents. Some sections resemble a mine shaft; others are concrete-lined passages.

The tunnels are partially flooded in places, and sewage seeps through in others. Rubber boots are strongly recommended for a visit.

The map point marks the most accessible entrance. Once inside through one entrance, you can try to exit through another. Timing is key when entering — wait for a moment when no one is watching.
