Underground Fuel Depot B-Z

These tunnels are enormous in scale and were built to house fuel storage tanks. Two tunnels run parallel to each other, each roughly 100 metres long. One is of standard human-scale dimensions; the other rises more than 20 metres high and stretches over 10 metres wide, subdivided by partition walls into three sections. Each section has its own opening into the smaller tunnel. On the floor of the vast tunnel you can see circular concrete bases that once supported colossal fuel tanks — two per section — along with recessed channels for pipelines. The ceiling retains remnants of plastic waterproofing sheeting, installed so that water seeping through the rock would not drip onto the tanks but instead be channelled to the sides and run down the walls.

From the smaller tunnel a side passage branches off to the right and leads into a huge hemispherical hall roughly 20 metres in diameter, like a dome carved inside the living rock. Nearby there are also a couple of unfinished tunnels, one of which likewise has a very high ceiling — suggesting that further underground chambers for fuel storage had been planned. The sheer scale of the complex is staggering.

A road now leads directly to the site and access to the tunnels is completely unrestricted. Judging by satellite imagery, the road was cut relatively recently, when scrap metal was being removed from the depot. An active facility with similar tunnels lies just next door; in the past the road to the abandoned depot ran through it. That neighbouring site is occupied — by the military or some other entity.
