Kukës is Albania’s youngest city. The old town was drowned by the Fierza reservoir in the 1970s, and the new one was built from scratch on a plateau. That is exactly what makes it interesting: fortification was part of the plan from the start.
Tunnels twenty metres down connect the key buildings and open into some of the apartment blocks. A huge underground hospital was dug beneath the city clinic, and the district’s underground command post feeds local legends of seven kilometres of passages. The city itself was built to socialist standards and still looks neat. Old mines are scattered around it.
