Tirana is the capital and the largest city in the country. The communist regime ringed it with defences: bunkers, depots and artillery positions sit on the hills and between them, and there are more command bunkers for the different branches of the armed forces here than in any other region. The best known is Object 0774, the former army headquarters, now open as the Bunk’Art 1 museum.
After the fall of communism the city grew and swallowed many of them — a bunker entrance next to somebody’s house is an ordinary sight here. Further out, abandoned and dying villages stand on the hills.
Architecturally, Tirana is at its most interesting along the main boulevard: the best route runs from the central square with its ministry buildings to the University of Tirana, past the Pyramid, Hoxha’s house and the national library.
